The pact did not bring stability to which Eden hoped. Nasser was the ultimate threat to his position as guardian of Arab nationalism. The Pact represented for him a colonial divide-and-rule policy with Iraq, Egypt's rival in the region, was built by Britain at the expense of Egypt. To undermine the pact, Nasser grabbed the only means was available, he began a rabid propaganda campaign against the Baghdad Pact, "the stooges of imperialism." Nasser's efforts would ultimately be successful. The pact was not extended despite overtures from Iraq toward Syria, Lebanon and Jordan. Only Iran, Pakistan, Turkey and Britain joined.
