De Britse positie in het Midden-Oos

De Britse positie in het Midden-Oosten wankelde. De Britten waren echter niet van plan langs de zijlijn toe te kijken hoe Nasser en de Sovjet Unie de Britse positie innamen. Eden, in 1955 eindelijk tot minister president van Groot-Brittannië geworden, sloot zich dan ook met enthousiasme aan bij een defensiepact waarover sinds 12 januari 1955 op instigatie van Irak onderhandeld werd, zeker nadat Egypte niet verzekerd was "as a hinge upon which a new defensive organisation might turn". Dit zogenaamde Bagdadpact was in feite een defensieblok aan de zuidgrens van Rusland ontworpen om de communistische infiltratie in te dammen.
