Gelijktijdig met de Suezcrisis van 1956 voltrok zich nog een poging tot beïnvloeden van een voor Groot-Brittannië onplezierige situatie. Syrië stond onder zware Russische invloed en vooral Nuri, welke een nauw verband tussen Irak en Syrië voorstond, wilde deze situatie omkeren. In een haast "amateurish coalition of the Iraqi, British and American intelligence services" speelde Groot-Brittannië haar rol in een plot van Nuri om de Syrische regering omver te werpen. Uiteindelijk mislukte de coup en in oktober 1956 werden verschillende arrestaties gedaan: de Syrische geheime dienst was op de hoogte van de plannen.
