Simultaneously with the Suez crisis of 1956 took place another attempt at influencing a unpleasant situation for Great Britain. Syria was under heavy Russian influence and, above all, Nuri, which a close connection between Iraq and Syria stood for, wanted to reverse this situation. In a hurry "amateurish coalition of the Iraqi, British and American intelligence services" Britain played her role in a plot to overthrow the Syrian Government of Nuri. The coup failed and several arrests were made in October 1956: the Syrian secret service was aware of the plans.
